"With its Southern Rock style, "The Georgia Thunderbolts" is primarily aimed at Lynyrd Skynyrd fans."

When a new band shows up in the southern rock scene, they are likely to be quickly compared to Lynyrd Skynyrd (especially if they're from Alabama), Molly Hatchet (especially if they're from Florida) or the Allman Brothers Band. Originally from the state of Georgia (Rome), it is to this last legend that The Georgia Thunderbolts are immediately affiliated. However, the listening of this first short discographic testimony rarely refers to the legend of Macon and it is rather to Lynyrd Skynyrd that the five titles of this eponymous EP make us think.
The single 'Looking For An Old Friend' quickly proves to be warm and endearing with its country touches, vintage sounds and luminous slide. Lyle, Couzourt & Cie also include their social messages to the working class. They claim their origins in a 'Spirit Of A Workin' Man' with heavy/blues riffs and a slightly rougher vocals, while they are optimistic and encouraging on a well-made 'So You Wanna Change The World' with alternating calm verses and catchy choruses. There's enough to grab the steering wheel of his pick-up truck to hit the highways of the southern states at sunset with a perfectly adapted soundtrack.
However, The Georgia Thunderbolts is still missing something. The interpretation is flawless and there is no lack of taste, but where a Whiskey Myers or a Blackberry Smoke already imposes enough of a trademark to stand out from the giants of the genre, the Georgians remain too glued to what Lynyrd Skynyrd has been able to offer throughout his legendary career. Nevertheless, the almost grungy approach of a 'Land A Hand', or the more ambitious approach of a 'Set Me Free' spreading its slow rise in intensity over seven minutes, give hope that next time could be the right one if the quintet digs a little more in these directions.
Despite their undeniable qualities and well-made tracks, The Georgia Thunderbolts still lack the maturity to claim to be part of the next generation of southern rock giants. They will have to affirm a little more their identity to stand out from the followers as talented as they are and thus shine in turn alongside Whiskey Myers, Blackberry Smoke and other Robert Jon & The Wreck. - Official website
