He may be totally unknown in France, but Giacomo Casile is not a newcomer. Just look at the many projects he has collaborated on to realize that the Calabrian is a jack-of-all-trades who has tasted many different styles, from pop rock to death metal. Jack Brain is his solo project, which he has been developing since 2015 at a fast pace since "Midnight Sons" is already his fifth album. The opportunity for us to discover the music of the Italian who owes much to the alternative sounds of the 90s.
In terms of influences, Jack Brain is exactly at the border between post punk and grunge. He is the worthy heir of Joy Division on one side and Nirvana and Alice In Chains on the other. From the first, he inherited the underground and depressive side ('The Cosmic Lines', 'Satellites'). From the latter, he adopted the raw and dull guitar sound, especially in the saturations ('The Shimmer Town', 'The Infusion'). These choices give to "Midnight Sons" a particular identity which Jack Brain enjoys, on one hand by alternating the purely instrumental titles and the sung pieces, on the other hand by trying experiments sometimes surprising.
Indeed, the Italian likes to twist the codes of his own music on many occasions, in particular by leaning some titles to jazz rhythms ('Stupify') or even bossa nova ('Spellbinding') and by using the saxophone as a palliative to the absence of keyboards ('Windbag'), when he doesn't simply give it the first role ('Frantic', 'The Night Traveler').
So of course, Jack Brain does not succeed in everything he tries. His tribute to Jimi Hendrix with the title 'Experience' which recycles the riff of 'Foxy Lady' is for example quite dispensable. But his experimentations have at least the merit to give a certain eclecticism to his music which could otherwise be rather redundant. "Midnight Sons" is therefore a rather interesting album which would have undoubtedly gained in power with a more modern production but which has the merit to have been composed with a total artistic freedom. - Official website
