Figurehead of the Finnish death doom, with a lot of zombies in it and nourished by Amando de Ossorio's movies, Hooded Menace pushes for the fifth time the creaky door of the cemetery with "The Tritonus Bell" under the arm, which is dressed with a macabre visual by Wes Benscoter, a specialist of horrific covers (Bloodbath, Autopsy etc.).
If the value of the band is no longer to be proven, we have to admit that the work of Lasse Pyykkö, its founder, does not arouse the same excitement as at the time of "Never Cross The Dead" (2010). Although very good, "Ossuarium Silhouettes Unhallowed" testified three years ago not to a waning inspiration but to the obvious polishing of this death metal whose cavernous marrow made all the flavor.
Without surprise, this new effort imposes the same observation, continuing the evolution affirmed by its predecessor. The cover of WASP's 'Torture Never Stops', a band that we would never have imagined the Finns would revisit, sounds like a melodic confession and definitively buries the bile that ran through their veins ten years ago. Does this mean that this opus is bad? Not at all. Disappointing perhaps but no less inhabited by a real know-how. In fact, there are two ways to apprehend it according to your relationship with the band.
If you are a fan of the morbid sound and of the "it was better before", there is no doubt that "The Tritonus Bell" will seem to you quite wise, almost polished ('Those Who Absorb The Night'), bringing its authors closer to the Amorphis of "Tales From The Thousand Lakes". Without denying its seductive brilliance, 'Instruments Of Somber Finality' even poaches on the progressive lands of Devin Townsend from the "Accelerated Evolution" era.
But it is also possible to taste these excellent compositions which, generally locked in a very long format, between seven and nine minutes on average, conciliate nervous catchiness and ashen crawl in the depths of sinister castles. Witness this 'Chuime Diabolicus' that is lacerated by heady riffs and rhythmics. More than ever, Hooded Menace confirms the eternal tribute they owe to UK Doom and to Paradise Lost in particular. These granular guitars and especially the vocals of Harri Kuokkanen participate in this filiation ('Blood Ornaments').
