Hailing from France, Exhorted was born in 2018. Among its founders is Lionel Marquez who had led a successful career with Broken Edge until 2014. At his side, Yves Balendret officiates on vocals and for the album, Kevin Paradis (Benighted) on drums. This small band gives birth to "Old Bastards Never Die". A real war cry, this title is amplified by a very striking cover.
Hard-hitting is the perfect term to describe the music of the trio which evolves in a hard-hitting death metal with some melodic passages. Because most of the tracks crush everything in their path, delivering a death music carried by the abrasive vocals of Yves who screams with a huge rage. The style evokes the great bands of the genre, somewhere between Vader, Bolt Thrower and Hate with typical sharp riffs and impressive wild drums.
The band also offers several tracks that are less purely hardcore, and in doing so, airs out the record. Carried by a catchy chorus 'Don't Forget, Never Forgive' alternates raw power and melodic facet in Swedish style for an effective result. In the same idea, 'God Is Mine' and 'Let Me Go' are great with melodic riffs and solos in the spirit of the early At The Gates. 'Haunted House' shifts a lot towards a wild death metal, but there too some melodic riffs avoid it to be too drastic.
"Old Bastards Never Die' is a great start for Exhorted. With an impressive ability to mix ambiences, the band offers an album that should delight death metal fans, whether brutal or melodic. - Official website
