Where did we leave off with the very phlegmatic Tim Bowness? Since the beginning of his career, his discography has been fluctuating between highs and lows. The Englishman has the gift of releasing an album that arouses enthusiasm, then to follow it by productions that, if they are not dishonorable, remain marked by a certain blandness. The two previous records having been reproached for their monochrome languor, will "Butterfly Mind" respect this tradition? It would seem so.
Certainly, the Master of the places remains faithful to his vocal style and sings as usual with a muffled voice on a relatively slow tempo. But if he could be accused of a certain lack of presence on "Late Night Laments", he is much more involved on most of the tracks of this new opus, intelligently diversifying the effects (saturated voice on 'Say Your Goodbyes, Pt. 1', change of flow on 'Dark Nevada Dream') and the intentions (the rebellion of 'It's Easier To Love', the worrying sadness of 'Say Your Goodbyes, Pt. 2').
The accompaniment is also much less smooth than on the previous record, with notably a drumming that breathes dynamism even on the slowest tempos. A few incursions of flute here (Ian Anderson's), of violin there (poignant on 'Say Your Goodbyes, Pt. 2'), of a melancholic sax or of a Hammond organ, without forgetting a little funky guitar or choirs close to Hammill ('Say Your Goodbyes, Pt. 1') give a certain relief to the whole.
Of course, some tracks flirt with the languor of the previous album but, as they are quickly counterbalanced by rhythmic tracks, they don't generate the impression of boredom that too often emanated from "Late Night Laments". "Butterfly Mind" is thus quite easily in the top 3 of the best productions of Tim Bowness. - Official website
