"By having the audacity to interpret his songs in Danish, Mike Tramp takes an artistic risk but proves his talent with this curious and endearing "For Første Gang", despite its abuse of sweetness."

Let's not kid ourselves; when it comes to the most melodious dialects, Danish doesn't really rank high. But Mike Tramp has decided to offer us his new album in his native tongue. "For Første Gang", as it's called, means "for the first time", and it contains a lot of firsts. First album in its original language, but also first time that the former White Lion frontman composes his music based on the lyrics of another author. In this case, the lyrics are offered by Lars Daneskov, also the artist's biographer.
However, the formula has changed little, even if sweetness and melancholy are clearly the main ingredients here. Based on piano ritornellos, 'Det Jeg Var', 'Drømme' or 'Album' are very delicate and soothing, and only the more Rock 'Vejkort' with a catchy chorus and the slightly syncopated 'Jeg Holder Fast' are a bit more punchy. In a way, the use of the language of Hamlet's kingdom is almost a good thing to bring a bit of roughness to the whole, like on 'Flamme Og Benzin'. However, don't take our words as a condemnation of this opus which remains a pleasant listening moment. Mike Tramp didn't hesitate to add some nice arrangements, like on the single 'For Første Gang For Altid' with its string lines giving it some soulful touches. This is also the case with 'Hjem', which is fresh and optimistic and slightly accelerating. This will be the last time, as ballads monopolise the end of the album.
If there's no doubt that "For Første Gang" will find its audience in Scandinavia, it's nevertheless unlikely that it will spread beyond, despite its charm and the talent of its author. Especially since, even if each track is a delicately cut piece, the sequence of ballads and mid-tempi can end up leaving a feeling of linearity, especially on the second part of this opus. It is nevertheless a proof of the independence and authenticity of a Mike Tramp who doesn't hesitate to take some risks while asserting his talent and his identity. - Official website
