Powerwolf has learned to stay busy and avoid going long without news. He's back with "Interludium", just two years after his previous album and a few months after "The Monumental Mass". As its name suggests, "Interludium" is a hybrid. It consists of six new tracks, four rarities and a cover similar to the previous albums.
Concerning the news, Powerwolf applies its epic, theatrical recipe to the letter. The choruses are effective, with Attila in mystical storyteller mode. Guitars are back in the mix, especially on the soli. With its Celtic melody, 'Altars Of Fire' stands out from the rest, the chorus making you want to raise your fist, and the galloping instrumental part in Iron Maiden mode is delightful. 'No Prayer At Midnight' and 'My Will Be Done' feel like filler, the latter being a banal reworking of 'Resurrection By Erection' and 'Sanctified By Dynamite'.
To complete the album, Powerwolf have delved into their archives. 'Stronger Than The Sacrament' and 'Living On A Nightmare' appeared on EPs released in 2012 and 2015, showing an artisanal Powerwolf with a less huge sound. The band sounds fresh and still naive, with classic melodic speed metal. 'Midnigth Madonna' and 'Bête du Gévaudan' are album extras; the former is typical of the band's style with good epic force, and the latter is the French version of 'Beast Of Gevaudan', not so essential but fun for Attila's marked French accent.
"Interludium" is a pleasant recreation, the perfect gift for fans. The unreleased tracks don't offer much in the way of insights, as the band remains in its comfort zone. - Official website
