If there's one virtue that's a must if you're an Extreme fan, it's patience. The Boston band had already kept us waiting for nearly fifteen years to release a less-than-convincing "Saudade de Rock" as a successor to "Waiting for the Punchline", itself not exactly up to the band's standards. Not many people believed it would happen, but now, fifteen years on, the latest incarnation of the band unjustly famous for its hit 'More Than Words' is finally releasing its sixth album.
"Six" is reminiscent of "Three Sides To Every Story" in many ways, the first part of the album being more rock than the second, but the legitimacy of tracks such as Beautiful Girls is questionable. Audiences have to deal with a band so eclectic that they sometimes have to check whether they're listening to the same album. Some will cry "creative genius", while others will tire of being constantly thrown off track by an album that started out so well.
Let's be clear, Nuno Bettencourt may have occasionally strayed from the rock milieu, but he remains an unrivalled guitar hero. His subtle sensitivity, his unique touch, his great creativity, and of course his class with his Washburn N4 are second to none. And at a time when it's become difficult to surprise the listener with so many guitar possibilities, Nuno still manages to astonish us with his jaw-popping phrasing and soli. The monstrous solo on 'Rise' speaks for itself, as do the countless articles and videos posted on the networks since the single's release.
While Gary Cherone brings a personal touch reminiscent of Extreme's best moments, it's definitely Nuno Bettencourt's performance that is central to the band's work. And it doesn't stop at his guitar technique. Nuno is in fact a complete artist, knowing how to play and sing just about everything, and never falling into the trap of showing off.
All in all, "Six" is a demanding album that deserves several listens, alternately inviting you to headbang, frown, pick up your jaw after a solo, stomp your feet and savor a melody with your eyes closed. Extreme isn't for everyone, just like his chaotic career. But with a little effort and patience, you can enter his universe, and let's face it, it's a real pleasure to see him again... - Official website
