Southern rock is about transmission, but it's also about sensations. More than a genre, it's a music to be listened to while driving, windows open, on endless roads where the asphalt merges with the horizon. It's music that smells of the heat of the South, the dust of the byways and the desire to escape. The Georgia Thunderbolts have understood this. “Rise Above It All” is not a manifesto, nor does it pretend to shake up the established order. It's a record that soaks up these images, driven by raw energy and unquestionable sincerity.
But behind its apparent simplicity, the album reveals some interesting nuances. If 'Gonna Shine' and 'Rock and Roll Record' perfectly capture the spirit of Southern rock with their warm riffs and infectious energy, “Rise Above It All” doesn't limit itself to tradition. "Rise Above It All”, in fact, moves away from sunny open spaces to explore heavier territory, where the guitars become heavier and the groove thicker, flirting with the shadow of Black Sabbath. It's a reminder that southern rock is more than just a cavalcade of guitars, and can also venture into leaden atmospheres.
Conversely, the album also knows how to slow down and leave room for more emotion. 'Wait' and 'Crawling My Way Back To You' temper the ardour of the opening tracks with a more introspective approach, with a discreet but undeniable country influence. It's not pure country-rock, but these arrangements, these melodies that drag slightly, evoke that cross between smoky bar ballad and regret drowned in a glass of bourbon. Another facet of the South, more contemplative and nostalgic. And then there's 'It Ain't Easy', which surprises with its gospel accents, proof that the band doesn't limit itself to a single box and that it knows how to draw on other roots of American music to enrich its message.
With “Rise Above It All”, The Georgia Thunderbolts don't revolutionize the genre, but they bring it to life with passion. A record that doesn't force anything, that breathes naturally, and that, between bursts of light, country surges and heavier shadows, traces its path with undeniable authenticity. - Official website
