"This “Full Tilt Overdrive” is a fine vintage from House Of Lords, especially on its sparkling second half."

Two years after their “Saints And Sinners”, which astounded us on its first half and disappointed us so much on the second, here come the granddaddies of melodic hard rock, the tenacious House Of Lords. “Full Tilt Overdrive” comes in this humid autumn, 36 years after the Americans' first vinyl appearance.

By blowing hot and cold from one album - or even one track - to the next, producing in turn outstanding works and sketchy deliveries, the combo condemns the newcomer to be greeted with circumspection. And the start of hostilities is no exception, with the very good alternating with the mediocre. However, these princes of melodic hard rock reverse this trend at the start of the middle section of “Full Tilt Overdrive”, and deliver six tracks in the second half that would get an entire arena on its feet.

These fifty minutes of highly melodic hard rock in no way revolutionize the genre, but they do have their moments of elation, putting the listener on a drip of reassuring tunes. After almost four decades of loyal service, House Of Lords is unlikely to win over the younger generation but fans of old-school anthems will certainly be present for this fourteenth album. As for the prize for best song, we'll be awarding it to the opus' closing track, the masterful 'Castles Light'. At once epic and atmospheric, it brilliantly unfolds its ten minutes teeming with beautiful melodic ideas, Deep Purple-like organ sounds and vocal interweavings between James and Madame (Robin Beck).

We recently learned that the frontman was fighting for his life against cancer. So we thank him gratefully for this well-mannered “Full Tilt Overdrive” and wish him all the best for a speedy recovery.

OTHER REVIEWS
NIGHTWISH: Yesterwynde (2024)
MELODIC METAL - Less metal, more progressive and as symphonic as ever, “Yesterwynde” may suffer from a disappointing mix, but above all it stands out as a subtle and daring temporal fresco.
SCORCHED EARTH: The Day Of The Damned (2024)
DEATH METAL - “The Day Of The Damned” is a pleasant record, but lacks risk-taking and struggles to assert its difference.
