Barely 5 years after Fiendish, his first opus, here comes the seventh album of Phideaux rightly named : Number Seven ! A cover with raw colors (fortunately the original project was abandoned) seems to announce the confrontation of a dormouse and a crayfish, what a program!

Reading the titles, we have the confirmation of the main thread of this new story coming out of the (fertile!) imagination of Mr. Xavier: the adventures of a dormouse! This allegory is spread over 16 tracks divided into three main parts and, if the subject may seem surprising, it is clear that it does not take more to our brilliant creator to produce a work as inspired as Doomsday Afternoon. The intro, "Dormouse - A Theme", gives the tone: calm melody centered on the piano, an atmosphere dear to Phideaux. From the second track ("Wating For The Axe To Fall") and the arrival of vocals shared by Phideaux and Valerie Gracious, all the ingredients that made you love Doomsday Afternoon are present: the two-headed lyricists, the flamboyant keyboards and the discreet but effective guitars ("Prequiem").

Less grandiloquent than its predecessor, this Number Seven leaves the listener a bit hungry at first listen, but its richness is revealed during the following ones. It will be hard to put forward some tracks, except those of the second part ("Dormouse Escapes") which are globally richer in instruments (guitars, synths, sax, violin) and in surprises. There are in this central act various reminiscences like Renaissance and Mike Oldfield in "The Search For Terrestrial Life" and "A Fistfull Of Fortitude".

Number Seven and its construction in three parts, prove, if it were necessary, that Phideaux Xavier is a talented composer capable of writing a work that is similar to an opera. He dazzles us once again by his qualities as a musician and singer. Surrounded by some irreproachable instrumentalists, he produces with this seventh opus more than an honorable sequel to Doomsday Afternoon. And, before concluding, let's come back to the vocal performances of Valerie Gracious which make shiver throughout this album, especially when the beautiful one allows herself to go and get high phrasings worthy of the great Annie Haslam.

Phideaux has accustomed us to excellence and Number Seven is a further proof of his talent. If you are sensitive to this brilliant but not noisy music, this album should enter your 'Top 10' of 2009.

OTHER REVIEWS
HELLOWEEN: Better Than Raw (1998)
HEAVY METAL - Less dark than its predecessor, "Better Than Raw" is another excellent album from Helloween, both Heavy and melodic.
HELLOWEEN: The Dark Ride (2000)
HEAVY METAL - "The Dark Ride" is probably Helloween's most difficult record to access, but it's well worth a listen as it brings real depth to the band's music.
