"With "The Dixie Dead", the Americans find a good inspiration and offer a kind of distracting soundtrack of an 80's horror film."

Despite strong imagery and horrific heavy metal music that owes as much to punk as to glam, Wednesday 13, played by the singer of the Murderdolls, has trouble getting his solo band off the ground. "The Dixie Dead" is already his 5th album and it follows a "Calling All Corpses" that went almost unnoticed by us. It must be said that the sympathy capital and horrific aspects could not hide a certain shortness of breath and that Wednesday 13 failed to take an artistic step forward.
The album is partly conceptual and presents itself as the soundtrack of an 80's horror film, the cover referring to "Evil Dead". Wednesday 13's musical recipe is always a mix of heavy and martial music close to Ministry. And if it is without surprises, it at least has the merit of having found inspiration and thus makes us forget recent mistakes.
Because there are some really good tracks on the program of this opus. We can mention in general the heavy "Hail Ming", the lighter "Too Fast For Blood", the gory version of Mötley Crüe's "Too Fast For Love", "Fuck You" (In Memory Of)"', an obvious scenic anthem, or "Ghost Stories", a very beautiful slower track magnified by the keyboards that bring a horrific atmosphere. Songs like "Blood Sucker", "Hands Of The Ripper" or "Carol Anne...They're Here" contribute to the disc's black, fun and offbeat atmosphere, giving the horror a very entertaining color. The interludes are also interesting, from the intro to the outro through "Coming Attractions" in the middle of the disc, they fulfill their purpose and allow the listener to fully immerse himself in the gloomy ambiences that surround the disc.
"The Dixie Dead" is a nice surprise from a Wednesday 13 that we thought was a bit lost artistically. With this album the Americans find a good inspiration and offer a distracting moment if not original... - Official website
